Tips for Newbies from the Underground Gym Team
Don’t be afraid to ask for help
A gym is an overwhelming place especially if you are a beginner and have no idea what you should be doing. A good idea is to seek professional help on how to get started and the best way to reach your goals. The gym is a good environment where you have like minded individuals who want to help each other. Whether you ask a more experienced member or a staff member most people are willing to help.
No one cares what you are doing
It is quite easy to be anxious in the gym and feel like you are out of place and everyone is watching you. In all honesty everyone in the gym is focusing on themselves and their own workouts and goals and probably not paying any attention to you. The only time people might look at you funny is if your form is poor and you could be doing
something dangerous. This follows from my previous point that if you find yourself in that boat, get some help.
Have a plan
When first coming to the gym I recommend having a plan or some sort of idea of what you are going to do in your training session. It is common to walk in and feel overwhelmed with all the equipment and people that you resort to cardio for an hour. Having a plan is also a great way to track your progress. It is not only motivating but means you can stay on track to reach your goals.
Do something you enjoy
]This is a big one. Simply, if you do not enjoy your training or any aspect about it you will find it very difficult to sustain for a long period of time. Try different things at the start and see what you enjoy then adjust your goals around that.
Appreciate the process
Finally, the most important point in my opinion. The famous saying “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” People think too much about their goals and where they want to be rather than the processes in place to achieve them. The process may be a slight tweak in your lifestyle and training or it may be a complete lifestyle change. The process is something you will learn to love, whether it is seeing slight changes in your physical appearance or noticing a change in your performance in your training or sport.
